Aitana Bonmati Secures Second Consecutive Women's Ballon d'Or
Aitana Bonmati has been awarded the Women's Ballon d'Or for the second year in a row, solidifying her status as one of the top footballers in the world. The Barcelona and Spain midfielder was honored during a ceremony in Paris on October 28, 2024, after an outstanding season in which she led her club to a historic quadruple. Barcelona's impressive haul included victories in Liga F, the Champions League, Supercopa, and Copa de la Reina, with Bonmati contributing a career-best total of 19 goals across all competitions.
In addition to her club success, Bonmati played a crucial role in Spain's triumph at the inaugural Women's Nations League, scoring four goals, including a vital strike in the final against France. After receiving the award, she expressed her gratitude and emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, "I always say this is not something that you can do alone. I'm so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful players who help me to keep growing into a better player."
The ceremony also saw significant recognition for women's football, as Emma Hayes was honored as the first women's coach of the year after leading Chelsea to their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title and guiding the United States to Olympic gold in Paris 2024. The awards reflect a growing acknowledgment of the talent in women's football, with Bonmati joining Alexia Putellas as the only players to win the Women's Ballon d'Or twice since its inception in 2018.
