Arsenal Coach Arteta Frustrated After Fulham Defeat
In the 20th round of the Premier League, Arsenal suffered a 1-2 away defeat to Fulham, and Arteta attended the press conference after the match.
Regarding the team's performance:
Arteta: "Painful, that's my summary. After 20 games, we had the opportunity to reach the top of the table with the stability we showed, but our performance wasn't good enough, and we couldn't win the game. Three days ago, we lost a game that we should have won, but today is a completely different story."
On the reasons for the defeat:
"We didn't do well; we didn't do well in terms of ball possession—we lost too many possessions, we didn't have good enough rhythm, a good enough plan, not enough threat. Defensively, we weren't as good as the opponent. We couldn't control them directly; they easily won free kicks or corners and had the chance to attack. We conceded two goals, just like against West Ham United. If you perform like this in the league, it's hard to win."
Regarding the substitutions in the 67th minute of the match (taking off Ben White and Martinelli, bringing on Jesus and Trossard):
"When you don't change the result, it doesn't work. That's for sure. They didn't have a good performance in the first half or the second half. In these 100 minutes of the game, we never reached the level we wanted to achieve."
Is this loss due to fatigue or other reasons?
"No, it's because our efficiency is not high enough. We don't have enough speed, enough running, enough threat. When we do that, we give the opponent too much possession. It's not just when we have possession, but also when we immediately try to regain control. That's the most dangerous moment. When you do that, you don't have a stable momentum. We never had a stable performance in the attacking third. When you concede two goals, winning the game becomes very difficult. Today, we shouldn't have won the game; it's very clear and simple."
Regarding losing 11 points in the Premier League in December:
"Even if you win 120 points, you will lose points in this league, but we dropped points in the away game against Liverpool, and the team performed well. We lost three points against West Ham United, but we played well. Today is a different story, that's why we feel sad because we didn't reach the level we had in the other 19 games. That's the reality."
